Since our founding in 1934, the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Northern California (ACLU NorCal) has been at the forefront of many of the most important civil liberties battles in California and the U.S. We work in courts, legislatures, and communities on a wide range of issues. Throughout, our aim is to preserve and guarantee the freedoms and protections of the Constitution’s Bill of Rights for all—especially those in communities which have traditionally been denied these essential rights. We’re best known for litigation and advocacy, but we also educate the public, inform the media, organize grassroots activists, and disseminate information about our constitutional freedoms through a vibrant community of over 110,000 card-carrying members, donors, and chapter volunteers.
